Motivational Interviewing Spirit

Evocation

-Start from the perspective that a supervisee already has much of what they need to be successful, and your role is to bring it to the surface.

-Focus on a person’s ambivalence. An ambivalent person has reasons not to change and reasons to change. Stay Curious.

-A person’s internal reasons for change are more persuasive than any argument that staff can make.

-Ask open-ended questions about a supervisee’s strengths and resources. A supervisee is more likely to be successful if they build on their own strengths.

-When practicing to show compassion, make an effort to demonstrate MI Spirit, Collaboration, Acceptance, and Compassion.
